WHAT ARE PIPED MEDICAL GAS SYSTEMS?

The main aim of this system is to ensure that a safe, cost-effective and convenient system is in place to provide medical gases. Using these helps to reduce any issues related to the use of gas cylinders, including:

  • Noise
  • Safety
  • Storage
  • Porterage

The Health Technical Memorandum outlines the sources of gas supplied by piped medical gas systems. These are Oxygen, Medical Air, and other gases including Nitrous.

Oxygen

This will either be supplied from liquid or compressed gas cylinders, a large vacuum-insulated evaporator (VIE), or a combination of the two. On top of this, a pressure-swing absorber can also be used.

Medical Air

Most commonly this is supplied from a compressed air plant, which will include filtration and drying equipment.  If the correct system is installed to provide both medical air and oxygen, then the power source may also use nitrogen for the surgical tools.

Others

These systems are also able to supply all other gas which can be supplied from a cylinder.
